Aguero: Man Utd beating PSG a Champions League warning for City

Sergio Aguero has told Manchester City to learn lessons from Paris Saint-Germain s shock Champions League exit to Manchester United.

City are in a strong position in their last-16 tie with Schalke, leading 3-2 thanks to late strikes from Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling in the first leg.

Pep Guardiola s side are among the favourites for the title but need to complete the job when Schalke visit Manchester for the return game on Tuesday.

And all-time leading goalscorer Aguero thinks City must be on their guard following United knocking out PSG and holders Real Madrid falling to Ajax.

Looking at the recent results, we have to be very careful, Aguero told ESPN.

We saw strange things happening this week and it helps us to know that we must be very fo…

Real Madrid v Paris Saint-Germain: Who has the best attack? The Champions League debate

The Champions League returns with a bang this week as holders Real Madrid take on Paris Saint-Germain in a blockbuster clash in the Spanish capital.

Madrid have won the Champions League in each of the last two seasons, but Zinedine Zidane is under pressure due to poor form in LaLiga this term.

PSG have prioritised the Champions League title since the takeover by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, but they could hardly have been handed a trickier last-16 tie.

Ahead of Wednesday s first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, two of our writers debate whether PSG or Madrid boast the most dangerous attack.

Ronaldo: I want to stay at Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo insists he wants to stay at Real Madrid despite continued speculation over his future.

Talk has grown of a potential transfer for the Portugal star at the end of the season, with Paris Saint-Germain widely mooted as a possible destination for the three-time Ballon d Or winner.

Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Andrea Pirlo have talked up the prospect of Ronaldo moving to MLS in future and Barcelona star Neymar even suggested this month that the 31-year-old would be welcome to cross the divide and join Madrid s great rivals.

Despite some criticism of his form at times this season, Ronaldo has stressed he continues to feel appreciated by the Madrid fans and is eager to prolong his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

I feel the support of the f…

Man United defender Dalot completes hip treatment in China

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has finished a 10-day injury treatment programme at Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG.

The Portuguese full-back arrived in Shanghai on August 29 to undergo rehabilitation on a hip problem with physiotherapist Eduardo Santos, SIPG confirmed.

Santos gained prominence in 2015 for his work with David Luiz, then of Paris Saint-Germain, and now heads up SIPG s medical department.

Dalot has not featured in a competitive match for United this season but a statement on the CSL side s website described his rehabilitation as being successfully completed.

Although it is a long journey, it is worthwhile for me, Dalot was quoted as saying.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last month suggested the 20-year-old wou…

PFA Premier League Team of the Year in Opta numbers

The PFA Premier League Team of the Year was released on Wednesday, prompting the usual arguments over who should and should not be included in the XI.

Champions Manchester City predictably dominate the selection with five representatives, but could have had even more, with Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane possibly unfortunate to miss out.

Liverpool fans would surely make cases for forward Roberto Firmino and left-back Andrew Robertson, while no players from outside the league s top-five sides have got the nod from their peers.

Here, we analyse the 11 men who made the cut with the use of Opta numbers and suggest who else could have made the team.

Galtier ready for Saint-Etienne exit

Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier is ready for a new challenge and will assess different offers, including those from the Premier League.

Galtier, 49, has been linked with numerous clubs in the English top flight, including Everton and Swansea City.

In charge of Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Etienne since 2009, Galtier said it was time for fresh opportunities away from his homeland.

I m ready for a challenge in a major championship and to fight for the top places, he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Serie A is a great championship and I already speak some of the language.

But I will also assess carefully the offers from Spain, Germany or England.

Saint-Etienne sit fifth in the Ligue 1 table and have managed a top-five finish in each of thei…

Costa Rica 0 Serbia 1: Kolarov stunner seals points

Aleksandar Kolarov s sensational free-kick proved the difference as Serbia got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in Group E.

Serbia, under the tutelage of Mladen Krstajic for the first time in a competitive match, controlled much of Sunday s clash at Samara Arena, but could not find a way through Costa Rica s stubborn rearguard until Kolarov stepped just before the hour.

Excellent throughout, Keylor Navas could do little to keep out the defender s blistering effort, which curled over the wall and into the top corner.

It was nothing less than Serbia deserved for a dominant display, although the best chance of the first half went to Costa Rica s Giancarlo Gonzalez, who headed over from point-blank range.

Krasnodar celebrate eighth anniversary by eliminating Fenerbahce

Krasnodar celebrated the eighth anniversary of their founding by eliminating Fenerbahce and reaching the last 16 of the Europa League for the first time thanks to a 1-1 draw that secured a 2-1 aggregate triumph.

Dick Advocaat s Fener lost the first leg 1-0 in Russia and found themselves with an even tougher task after just seven minutes in the return match as Fyodor Smolov found the bottom-right corner from 20 yards following a defensive mix-up.

Fener piled the pressure on at times and did level just before the break through Souza s close-range finish after a set-piece caused havoc in the area.

But the hosts failed to complete the turnaround and Krasnodar, who were only founded on February 22 2008, scraped through to second knockout phase.

RESULTS: Krasno…

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool can benefit from Alexis Mac Allister’s deeper role

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes his side can reap additional benefit from having Alexis Mac Allister as a makeshift holding midfielder.

The Reds boss was dismissive of the suggestion the Argentina international, who usually plays further forward, faces the biggest test of his adaptation into a new role at Manchester City on Saturday.

Mac Allister, who joined for £35million from Brighton, has coped well so far filling a hole in a newly-formed midfield with fellow summer signing Wataru Endo, a genuine number six, only entrusted with two Premier League starts, but the prospect of facing Pep Guardiola’s side on their own turf is an entirely different prospect.

The 24-year-old’s poorest performances in the role have come away from home – at Wolves, wher…

AC Milan´s Strinic sidelined by heart problem

Ivan Strinic will take an indefinite break from football after routine medical testing found the AC Milan left-back to be suffering from a heart problem.

The former Napoli man only signed on a free from Sampdoria last month but has now been ruled out pending further investigation of an initial hypertrophy of the heart .

Strinic, 31, is yet to make an appearance for the Rossoneri.

He featured in all but one of Croatia s matches at the World Cup, including the final defeat to France.

In a statement, the Serie A club said: AC Milan announces that during the six-monthly routine checks, scheduled in Italy for professional athletes, it was found that Ivan Strinic suffers from an initial hypertrophy of the heart, which needs further investigations to be performe…
